CNPC partners with Uzbekistan to build 1.5 bcm underground gas storage in Kashkadarya
The Ministry of Energy has signed an agreement with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) to build an underground gas storage (UGS) facility in Koson district of Kashkadarya region. The facility will be based on the Qorabayir field and will have a capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters.
According to the ministry, a memorandum of cooperation was also signed with CNPC on conducting preliminary research for the construction of the storage facility.
Initial scientific studies have identified the 12th horizon of the Qorabayir field as a suitable site for the UGS. Once completed, the storage facility will be able to hold up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of active natural gas.
At present, Uzbekistan operates two underground gas storage facilities – Gazli and Khojaobod. In October 2024, the Minister of Energy noted that a working group had also been set up to study the Sokh gas storage facility. The site is located on the territory of Kyrgyzstan, while the compressors and other technological equipment are situated in Uzbekistan.
