UN to collaborate with the SCO in ensuring stability and prosperity in Eurasia

Climate change, terrorism, violent extremism, human trafficking, drug and arms trafficking – on all of these issues, the UN is relying on the support of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). This was stated by Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, during a high-level meeting dedicated to strengthening of partnership between the UN and the SCO.
“The SCO plays a leading role in regional diplomacy. It contributes to the development of multilateral cooperation to sort out the most urgent issues of peace and security in Eurasia. Your organization brings together the largest number of residents compared to other regional groups in the world – 3 billion women and men,” António Guterres said.
The Secretary General thanked the member states of Shanghai Cooperation Organization for their contribution to the UN’s peacekeeping activities. António Guterres stressed that the SCO is an important partner of the UN in combating terrorism and violent extremism, as well as drug trafficking. He recalled the cooperation of two organizations in ensuring peace and security in Afghanistan. In his speech, the UN Secretary-General urged more active involvement of women and youth in these efforts.
