During the meeting, the Maltese leader highlighted the intensification of bilateral relations, made possible by Uzbekistan’s open and pragmatic foreign policy. Despite the significant geographical distance between the two countries, their shared interests and goals contribute to the development of comprehensive cooperation.

Particular attention was given to the issues of mutual support for candidacies and initiatives within international organizations such as the UN and the OSCE.

Over the past year, a new phase has emerged in the relations between the two states. In September 2024, the foreign ministers of Uzbekistan and Malta held a productive meeting for the first time on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. In January 2025, Malta appointed an ambassador to Uzbekistan with residence in Moscow, and the first round of inter-ministerial consultations took place in Valletta.

Since November 2023, Abat Fayzullayev has served as Uzbekistan’s ambassador to Italy and has represented the country in international organizations in Rome, such as the FAO, WHO, and UNODC. In December 2024, he was also appointed as Uzbekistan’s first ambassador to Cyprus.

From 2020 to 2023, he held the position of Uzbekistan’s ambassador to Austria, was concurrently accredited as ambassador to Hungary, and represented the country at the OSCE and other international organizations in Vienna.
