The most glittering among the prizes is, of course, an award “The Best” for The Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year. FIFA has been announcing the best player of the year since 1991. Between 2010 and 2016, The FIFA Best Player Prize and “the Golden Ball”, established by France's prestigious France Football publisher, were merged but since the end of 2016 the prizes has been presented separately.

Unlike "The Golden Ball" of France Football, FIFA's "The Best" will be chosen through voting. 25 % of the vote is based on the votes cast by fans and public opinion, and another 25 % by the global media. The remaining 50 % of the voting rights are given to all national team coaches (25 %) and their captains (25 %).

Last year FIFA found Cristiano Ronaldo, the forward of Portugal national team and Real Madrid at that time, as The Best. Cristiano Ronaldo, who is among the nominees, will not attend today’s awarding ceremony. He explained it with Juventus’s tight schedule.

Forward of Barcelona Lionel Messi, who is not among “the three nominees for the Best Men's Player award” for the first time since 2006, is expected to be among the participants of the event in London. Even if he is not one of the three nominees for the best player, he will be in the symbolic Team of the year (FIFAPro World 11), and found as an author of the best goal. He is nominated for the Puskas Award for his strike against Nigeria in the World Cup 2018.
