Relatives of a billionaire of Uzbek origin were accused of smuggling
The son and brother of Lev Leviev, the Russian-speaking billionaire of Uzbek origin, were among those detained in Israel by the case of large-scale smuggling of diamonds, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the website of the newspaper Haaretz.
Investigators suspect six defendants who are related to the illegal importation of precious stones totaling over $ 80 million in the case. On November 5, they were taken into custody.
“Among the detainees are Moshe - Leviev’s brother and Zvulun - his son,” Haaretz wrote. Their attorneys insist on the innocence of their clients.
In accordance with the statement of the company LLD which is owned by Lev Leviev, the entrepreneur himself is acting in compliance with the law.
“We hope that the issue will be sorted out and suspicions will be proved groundless,” the press release said.
Lev Leviev, an Uzbek origin, is considered one of the richest citizens of Israel. He is engaged in the diamond and development business. He owns assets around the world, including in Russia.
The police are still refusing to officially call the names of the defendants and disclose other details of the case. Reportedly, they plan to carry out “additional arrests in Israel and abroad”.
