Uzbekistan may construct another railway in Afghanistan
On November 28, 2018, an international conference on Afghanistan took place in Geneva (Switzerland). The Uzbek delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulaziz Kamilov attended it.
The forum was also attended by the Afghan President Mohamed Ashraf Ghani, representatives of about 70 countries, including Central Asia, India, Iran and Pakistan.
Conference participants discussed current state and prospects of peaceful settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan, supporting the initiatives and mechanisms of regional cooperation, as well as possible ways to achieve a perpetual peace and stability in IRA.
The Uzbek Minister emphasized that along with efforts to reconcile two sides, it is important so support financially the economic future and social stability of Afghanistan as well as the young Afghan generation.
Uzbekistan is targeting to implement initiatives in the areas of transport, energy, trade and education which are critically important for Afghanistan.
“Let’s consider the example of the construction of Mazar-i- Sharif – Herat railway. Implementation of this project will provide employment for 30,000 Afghans. It will also allow Kabul to earn $ 400-500 million per year,” Abdulaziz Kamilov said.
It is worth noting that the construction of Surkhon-Puli-Khumri power transmission line will increase the supply of electricity from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan by 70% and bring up to 6 billion kWh a year.
This network connects Kabul with the unique Central Asian energy system. Besides, the power line Surkhan-Puli-Khumri can be an integral part of the Central Asia-South Asia power project (CASA-1000).
