UN Special Representative for Afghanistan visits Uzbekistan
On February 5, 2019, Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, Abdulaziz Kamilov, received the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, the Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Tadamichi Yamamoto, who arrived in our country on a working visit.
At the meeting, an exchange of views took place on key areas of cooperation between Uzbekistan and UNAMA, including in the fields of security and sustainable development, the establishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Tadamichi Yamamoto stressed that the UN and its institutions, in particular UNAMA, welcome and support the consistent policy of Uzbekistan, led by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, to launch the peace process in Afghanistan and its social and economic revival, infrastructure projects, and regional cooperation.
The Foreign Minister said that the Uzbek side is ready to create all the necessary conditions for organizing direct talks between the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban movement in the country.
The meeting also discussed other issues on the common agenda. The sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in strengthening cooperation against challenges and threats from international terrorism, transnational organized crime and illicit drug trafficking.
Resident Coordinator of the UN, Permanent Representative of the UNDP Helen Fraser did also take part in the conversation.
