Malaysian Technological University MARA to establish cooperation with “Silk Road” International University of Tourism in Samarkand
On May 21, 2019, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Malaysia Ravshan Usmanov met with the rector of the MARA University of Technology (UiTM) Mohd Azraai Kassim.
UiTM, established in 1956, is the largest state university in Malaysia, it ranks 6th in the world among mega-universities (168,000 students are enrolled). The University has 26 branches in all states of the country and provides a wide range of educational programs in baccalaureate, master’s degree and doctoral studies in 500 specialties.
During the meeting, the Malaysian side got acquainted with the ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan in the fields of education, health, youth policy, socio-economic development and training of qualified personnel. Information was presented on 13 new higher education institutions opened in the country, including the Silk Road International University of Tourism in Samarkand, as well as cooperation with leading Malaysian universities to launch franchise programs and campuses in Uzbekistan. It was noted that the leadership of Uzbekistan set the task to create an educational hub for the whole Central Asian region in the republic.
UiTM rector stressed that the establishment of cooperation between the universities of the two countries has great potential and the Malaysian side is ready to establish contacts with Uzbek partners, in particular, with the Silk Road International University of Tourism and the “El-Yurt Umidi” Foundation.
Following the meeting, the below agreements were reached:
- organization of UiTM representatives’ visit to Uzbekistan at the end of June this year to establish contacts with the Silk Road International University of Tourism with the possible conclusion of a cooperation agreement and with the prospect of opening in Samarkand a joint faculty on training specialists in the tourism industry;
- establishing cooperation with universities of Uzbekistan, including through the “El-Yurt Umidi” Foundation, organizing short-term (medium-term) internship and exchange programs.
