UN delegation to observe parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan
On July 22, 2019, delegation of Uzbekistan led by Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov met in New York with United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, Mohamed Khaled Khiari, the press service of the MFA reported.
At the meeting the UN representative highly appreciated the recent dynamics of Uzbekistan’s cooperation within the organization, unprecedented and irreversible reforms carried out under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev aimed at comprehensive development of the country and strengthening good neighborly relations with Central Asian countries, which is an important factor of regional integration, ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan.
As Mohamed Khaled Khiari stated, the policy of President Mirziyoyev on building good-neighborly relations in Central Asia is fully supported by the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres, who has repeatedly spoken about this publicly.
The UN official thanked the Uzbek side for actively promoting the peace process in Afghanistan.
The parties paid special attention to the participation of the UN and its structures in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan, which will be held in December this year, and the decision of the organization’s leadership on sending the UN mission to the country to assist in qualitative and impartial organization of the electoral process.
