Uzbekistan welcomes formation of an Afghan delegation to negotiate with Taliban
Uzbekistan welcomes the agreement of Afghan leaders to create a delegation to negotiate with the Taliban movement, the MFA reported.
“Uzbekistan welcomes the agreement of the leaders of Afghanistan on the formation of an inclusive negotiating team and sees this as a decisive step towards a peaceful resolution of the domestic political crisis. It is extremely important at this stage to implement the agreements reached earlier on a ceasefire, the transition to a nationwide inter-Afghan dialogue with the participation of all interested parties, including the Taliban movement,” the report said.
The Foreign Ministry of Uzbekistan reiterated its strong commitment to further develop and strengthen relations of friendship and good neighborliness with the people of Afghanistan. It strongly supports the process of establishing a long-lasting peace in the country.
At the end of February, at a ceremony in Qatar, the United States and the Taliban signed the first peace agreement, which provides for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan in 14 months and the start of an inter-Afghan dialogue in March after a prisoner exchange deal.
According to the deal, inter-Afghan negotiations were supposed to begin on March 10. But due to disagreements between the President of Afghanistan and his main political opponent, former Prime Minister Abdullah Abdullah, until recently, it was not possible to form a single delegation of Kabul in negotiations with the Taliban movement.
