Central Bank intends to introduce a graphic representation of the soum
The Central Bank proposes to develop a project for graphic representation of the national currency of Uzbekistan (soum) through a design competition.
A petition on the introduction of a graphic representation of the national currency of Uzbekistan – the soum – has been posted on the collective references portal “Mening fikrim” (“My opinion”).
It was noted that in recent years the country has been carrying out large-scale reforms in all areas. At present, electronic payments in the national currency are made on Internet sites and in various online stores. The national currency is indicated in transactions in the form of UZS. The soum is also written in full in supermarkets and other outlets.
“We need to introduce a graphic representation of the soum. For example, ₸ represents Kazakhstani tenge, ⊆ – Kyrgyz som, € – euro, etc. If the graphic symbol of the soum is introduced, the characters in texts will be shortened and it will be easier to write the soum. Prices on counters will increase in size,” the petitioner wrote.
