Sherzod Shermatov: The decision to open schools will be made only by deputies of local councils
The decision to open schools in Uzbekistan is made only by deputies of local councils. This depends on the readiness of schools, the sanitary-epidemiological situation in the region and the capabilities of the healthcare system, the Minister of Public Education Sherzod Shermatov said.

He noted that one of the main reforms carried out by the President in recent years is the gradual increase in the powers of local councils. They now also determine in what direction the local budget will be used.
Local deputies can decide to start the activities of schools only after they have made sure that schools have been provided with pyrometers, pulverizers, antiseptics and disinfectants, and that they have been provided with adequate supplies.
If a school does not meet sanitary requirements or if the sanitary-epidemiological situation in the area is not of the expected standard or if the healthcare system cannot cope with the increase in the number of patients, the local council may decide to leave the school closed. In this case, pupils will be able to continue their education remotely through TV lessons starting from September 14 when the new academic year begins,ā the Minister said.
According to Shermatov, the President had stressed the need to study the situation of each school, the epidemiological situation at places and the capabilities of the healthcare system, and make decisions based on the situation.
āEven if all sanitary requirements are met, no one can guarantee that the school will be fully protected against the coronavirus. For example, in such countries as Germany and South Korea, many schools have been closed again due to the spread of the virus. They have not only high financial opportunities, but the populationās behavior in public places is also much better than ours (for example, you can observe the culture of how people stand in line there and here).
It has also been repeatedly emphasized that the decision to send a child to school or to teach at home through TV lessons should be made only by parents themselves. It is strictly prohibited to force anyone in this matter,ā Shermatov concluded.
