On June 22, Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov had a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

According to the press service of the Foreign Ministry, during the conversation, the minister discussed aspects of Uzbek-Russian cooperation in areas of mutual interest, considered the schedule of the upcoming official meetings at various levels, and exchanged views on regional security and international policy.

“Special attention is paid to the participation of the Russian side in the “Central and South Asia: regional interconnectivity. Challenges and opportunities” high-level international conference,” the message said.

In addition, on June 22, the Special Representative of the President of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan, Ismatulla Irgashev, held talks with the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Afghanistan and Regional Affairs, Jean Arnault.

“During the conversation, Uzbekistan and the UN discussed efforts to resolve the Afghan problem and post-conflict reconstruction of the country. Jean Arnault praised the policy pursued by the Leadership of Uzbekistan to peacefully resolve the long-standing Afghan crisis, integrate the country into regional political and economic processes,” the press service of the Foreign Ministry said.

He emphasized the role of Uzbekistan in launching direct inter-Afghan negotiations, which, in his words, will contribute to the establishment of a long-awaited and sustainable peace in Afghanistan.

There was also a thorough exchange of views on the priority areas of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United Nations in terms of promoting the peace negotiation process, as well as the restoration of the national economy of Afghanistan, and the implementation of infrastructure projects in the country.

Earlier it was reported that last Friday, Taliban forces captured seven regions of Afghanistan. Thus, for the first time since 2001, the Taliban controls more parts of the country than the official government.

According to media reports, the Taliban also seized a customs point on the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
