President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced an initiative to raise relations between Uzbekistan and South Korea to the level of alliance. In an interview with Uzbekistan24 TV channel, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov said that the initiative was fully supported by Korean officials.

“Our President has come up with a new initiative. This initiative was fully supported by the Korean government and parliament. So far, we have continued our political cooperation on the basis of a strategic partnership document.

In recent years, our relations with Korea have developed significantly. Most importantly, mutual trust between the two countries has become so strong that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has taken the initiative to raise relations between Uzbekistan and South Korea to the level of alliance.

Of course, there is a lot of work here, but soon we will take practical steps. New areas will be opened in our relations, and our cooperation will be even stronger.

Korea supports Uzbekistan’s policy in the region, which is ready to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and ensure border security. Such cooperation fully meets the requirements of allied relations. Korea is ready to establish a new level of political relations,” Abdulaziz Kamilov said.

He also said that Uzbekistan fully supports the initiatives of the President of South Korea to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the region.

It should be recalled that Shavkat Mirziyoyev paid a three-day state visit to South Korea on December 16-18. During the joint events, a joint statement on deepening the special strategic partnership between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Korea was adopted and a number of agreements were signed.

Digitalization, the green economy, and strong social policy have also been identified as three key areas for a separate strategic partnership.

For information, to date, Uzbekistan has brought relations with only two countries to the level of alliance. A similar agreement was signed with Russia in 2005 and with Kazakhstan in December 2021.
