Military court in Russia sentences an Uzbek citizen to eight years

A military court sentenced a citizen of Uzbekistan to eight years in prison for financing the IS terrorist organization banned in Russia.

His extradition from the Russian Federation at the request of Uzbekistan was blocked by the decision of the ECHR, TASS reports.

The verdict of the second Western district military court against the citizen of Uzbekistan Javokhir Eshonkulov, who financed the international terrorist organization “Islamic State”, has entered into force. He was sentenced to eight years in prison to be served in a penal colony with a strict regime.

In 2021, Eshonkulov was detained by the Federal Security Service.

“It has been established that since 2013, the convict has been put on the interstate wanted list by the law enforcement agencies of the Republic of Uzbekistan in connection with his involvement in the recruitment and transfer of militants to the camps of an international terrorist organization in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” the FSB noted.

At the same time, attempts by the Russian side to extradite him to his homeland were blocked by the European Court of Human Rights with the assistance of human rights structures with the status of foreign agents.

“Thus, Eshonkulov got the opportunity to stay in Russia and continue his illegal activities for several more years,” the FSB said.
