Uzbekistan overtakes Kazakhstan in new Global Innovation Index

The republic took the 82nd place and entered the group of the most active in the innovation sphere.

Uzbekistan climbed another four positions in the Global Innovation Index (GII), Spot reported with reference to the Ministry of Innovative Development.

The GII 2022 report is dedicated to the theme “The Future of Innovative Development”. According to the compilers, it provides a perspective on the atmosphere in the field in the face of a pandemic, declining productivity growth and other challenges.

In 2021, Uzbekistan took the 86th place out of 132, now it has ranked 82nd. Among the countries of Central and South Asia, the republic ranks third after India and Iran.

Along with Pakistan and Indonesia, Uzbekistan has become one of the “countries achieving innovation” (innovation achievers). The indicators of innovative activity exceed those expected at the current level of the economy, the authors noted.

Particularly high rates were recorded in the sphere of institutions (63rd) and human capital (65th). The level of market development (market sophistication) is also noted - here Uzbekistan took the 60th place, beating Kazakhstan by 30 positions.

In the innovation spending sub-index, Uzbekistan moved up 7 positions to the 68th. Even greater growth was noted in the performance sub-index - the 91st place or plus 9 positions. Here the direction of scientific results stands out (80th).

At the same time, the effectiveness of innovation activity remains below average. In terms of creativity, Uzbekistan ranked 102nd (still higher than Kazakhstan).

The top 3 rankings included Switzerland, USA and Sweden. Russia is the leader among the CIS countries (47th place). Kazakhstan dropped to the 83rd place, Azerbaijan - to the 93rd. Kyrgyzstan has risen to the 94th place.

For information, the Global Innovation Index is a joint study by Cornell University (USA), Insead Business School (France) and the World Intellectual Property Organization. The rating is compiled on the basis of 81 indicators and serves to assess the level of innovative development in the world.
