Number of prisoners in Uzbekistan decreased by 3,000 people since year beginning

The Committee on Defense and Security of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis told how many convicts are currently serving sentences in colonies of different regimes.

At an expanded meeting of the Committee on Defense and Security of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis, it was noted that today there are 54 penal colonies in the republic, of which 18 are closed, 25 colony-settlements and 11 pre-trial detention centers.

Currently, more than 26,000 people are serving sentences in the penitentiary system, over 8,000 of them are serving sentences in a colony-settlement, 18,000 convicts in other types of colonies.

Reportedly, at the beginning of this year, there were more than 29,000 convicts in the penitentiary system, more than 7,000 of which were in penal colonies, and over 22,000 convicts - in other types of colonies.
