On June 25, at the meeting of the Defense and Security Committee of the Senate of Oliy Majlis, the MIA, Road Safety Service, Transport, Preschool and School Education Ministries, as well as the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Chamber of Accounts, heard information on the work being done to ensure road safety and reduce the number of deaths.

It is noted that in 2023, in order to prevent road traffic accidents, construction works with a total value of 13.5 trillion soums were carried out in about 8,000 objects across the republic. As a result, the number of traffic accidents decreased by 7.2%, and cases related to bodily injury by 8.7% during the 5 months of this year.

At the same time, 57% of traffic accidents were caused by road infrastructure deficiencies and 43% by drivers not following traffic rules. 53.7% of the incidents involved pedestrians and cyclists.

It is noted that 9,548 general secondary schools are located in high traffic areas, and most of the schools do not have sidewalks in front of them, and appropriate traffic lights are not installed. As a result, during the 5 months of this year, a total of 359 schoolchildren were involved in traffic accidents, 65 students were killed, and 294 students were injured in various degrees.

In 2023, a total of more than 16 million violations were registered due to the lack of effective control of passenger safety on the roads.

As a result of 9,839 traffic accidents, 9,209 citizens were injured and 2,282 citizens died.

In 2023, there were 1,794 traffic accidents involving children, in which 1,568 children were injured and 263 children died. It is noted that the weight of traffic accidents related to death is still high in the regions of Samarkand, Tashkent (80), Fergana (69), Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya (53).

It is noted that after the discussion, the decision of the Defense and Security Affairs Committee was adopted, which reflected specific proposals aimed at eliminating these shortcomings.
