Kazakhstan may use Uzbekistan’s grid for importing electricity from Tajikistan
The decision will depend on the technical capabilities of Uzbekistan's power grids.
Kazakhstan plans to begin importing electricity from Tajikistan using Uzbekistan’s transit capacity, according to the press service of Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy.
In 2023, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan signed a memorandum of understanding that includes electricity supplies from the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Station from 2023 to 2032.
The Rogun Hydroelectric Power Station is an under-construction hydroelectric facility in Tajikistan on the Vakhsh River, part of the Vakhsh cascade, serving as its upper tier. The completion of the $2.2 billion project is planned for 2029.
The Energy Minister of Kazakhstan held talks with representatives from the Tajikistan government and the Ministry of Energy, discussing the technical parameters and commercial terms of electricity export to Kazakhstan.
The implementation of this project will depend on the transit capabilities and agreed-upon terms for the passage of electricity through Uzbekistan.
In 2018, Uzbekistan considered participating in the construction of the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Station, but no final decision was made. In 2022, the government also expressed intentions to purchase electricity from the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Station during the summer period.
