Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to reopen Kara-Suu border crossing after 14-year closure

In the coming days, the Kara-Suu border crossing (known as Karasu on the Uzbek side), which has been closed for 14 years, is expected to reopen between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, Economist.kg reports.

The plenipotentiary representative of the Kyrgyz president in the Osh region, Elchibek Jantaev, visited the Kara-Suu border crossing during a working trip. The post is ready to resume operations in the coming days, the official noted.

The opening of this border crossing is expected to reduce the load on the main corridor between the two countries, Dostuk-Dustlik. Jantaev emphasized the need to expand the road leading to the border post and to maintain order in the area.

Additionally, the regional head visited the Intymak checkpoint and reviewed the restoration of the bridge over the Sharkan-Sai canal. The government expects that the opening of the road will improve transportation links.

Earlier this week, Kyrgyzstan's Ministry of Economy and Commerce announced the launch of an electronic queue system for freight vehicles at the border. The Kyzyl-Kiya — Uzbekistan border crossing in Batken region has been selected for the pilot phase of the project.

The system will be tested from November 1 to December 15 of this year. The project is being implemented with the support of the Ready4Trade Central Asia International Trade Center and is financed by the European Union.

The introduction of the electronic queue is aimed at speeding up border crossings, optimizing logistics processes, and reducing transportation costs. The new technologies aim to lower trade barriers within the region.
