Uzbekistan increases pressure on fugitives hiding in Türkiye
The Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Istanbul has announced a significant increase in operations to apprehend fugitives hiding in Türkiye to evade justice. Between January and October 2024, 37 individuals wanted by Uzbek authorities were detained and handed over to courts, according to a recent statement.
The consulate noted a growing trend of individuals attempting to avoid legal accountability by seeking refuge in Türkiye. However, strengthened collaboration between the interior ministries of Uzbekistan and Türkiye under mutual legal assistance agreements has yielded effective results in tracking and prosecuting such cases.
“In the first ten months of 2024 alone, 37 individuals who had been evading responsibility for years were detained in Türkiye and subjected to judicial review. Moving forward, efforts to apprehend wanted persons will be intensified. The fight against crime will continue uncompromisingly, ensuring accountability for violations,” the consulate stated.
Fugitives were reminded by the consulate that the only lawful path is to voluntarily surrender to Uzbek diplomatic missions or law enforcement authorities. They were encouraged to exercise their legal right to defense during investigation and trial processes.
On September 12, high-level talks in Tashkent between Uzbek and Turkish foreign and interior ministers and security officials resulted in agreements to institutionalize cooperation between the two countries' law enforcement agencies. Discussions also addressed resolving outstanding legal issues and enhancing cross-border crime prevention efforts.
