UN adopts Uzbekistan-led resolution on global forest restoration

The United Nations General Assembly in New York has adopted a resolution titled "Decade for Afforestation and Reforestation in line with Sustainable Forest Management", initiated by Uzbekistan.

More than 80 countries from all regions of the world co-sponsored the resolution, including Central Asian states, Azerbaijan, Russia, Brazil, Austria, Germany, Finland, Portugal, India, Iran, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain.

According to Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the resolution was developed on the basis of key initiatives put forward by the President of Uzbekistan. These include the Year of Environmental Protection and the Green Economy, the national Green Space project, and the regional tree-planting campaign Green Belt of Central Asia.

The resolution declares the years 2027–2036 as the Decade for Afforestation and Reforestation, calling for the mobilization of efforts and resources, and recommending that countries and organizations strengthen their related measures.

It is worth noting that in 2023, another resolution initiated by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev — “Central Asia Facing Environmental Challenges: Fostering Regional Solidarity for Sustainable Development and Prosperity” — was also adopted unanimously.
