Repeat gas release reported at M25 field in Boysun

Videos circulating online show a powerful jet of hydrogen sulfide-rich gas shooting tens of meters into the air. In the first official statement released eight hours after the incident, authorities reported that the gas flow had been flared to prevent further spread and that there was no threat to nearby settlements.

A gas eruption occurred at the “25 Years of Independence” gas field located in Boysun district of Surkhandarya region.

The incident, which took place around 6:00 a.m., was first officially reported at 1:57 p.m.

According to the Ministry of Energy, on May 5 at 6:10 a.m., a high-pressure release of gas containing elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide was observed from Well No. 202, resulting in a recurring gas fountain.

“To prevent the spread of hydrogen sulfide-rich gas, the flow was flared under controlled conditions. All necessary measures are being implemented with strict adherence to safety protocols. The area surrounding the incident has been cordoned off by relevant services, and the site is currently under continuous monitoring by specialists from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Uzbekistan, the State Inspectorate for Supervision of Industrial Safety (Sanoatkontexnazorat), and Uzbekistan’s militarized unit specializing in the prevention and elimination of open oil and gas blowouts,” the statement said.

The Ministry emphasized that the incident does not pose any danger to nearby residential areas.

It was also noted that a similar release of hydrogen sulfide-rich gas from this well had occurred previously on March 27, 2025, during which the gas was flared under supervision.

Later, on April 22, due to a collapse of the well shaft and the ejection of the well column, the gas fountain had stopped, though a minor surface gas seepage (griffon) continued to be observed at the site.

“Foreign experts have also been engaged at the scene to help eliminate the emergency,” the Ministry of Energy added.
