The head of state warmly welcomed the participants of the international conference, which is being held in Uzbekistan for the third time to address poverty reduction. He expressed gratitude to Islamic Development Bank President Muhammad Al Jasser, Asian Development Bank Vice President Inmin Yang, Japan International Cooperation Agency First Vice President Sachiko Imoto, UN Special Representative for Central Asia Kaha Imnadze, World Bank Global Director for Poverty Reduction Luis Felipe López-Calva, and all guests present.
The president noted that humanity is currently going through an extremely tense and complex period with unpredictable consequences. Geopolitical, economic, and social instability is deepening around the world. Climate change, water scarcity, and pandemics are creating serious and challenging trials for humankind.
Since 2015, global economic growth has averaged 3 percent, slowing compared to the previous decade. As a result, while five years ago 650 million people in the world lived in poverty, today their number has exceeded 800 million.
“This situation is putting forward new and pressing tasks for all states, international organizations, and the world community as a whole, demanding prompt decisions to find solutions,” the president said.
