Natural gas production continues to fall in Uzbekistan amid shifts in energy output
In January–August 2025, Uzbekistan saw declines in the production of several key energy resources. Natural gas output decreased by 4 percent, crude oil production dropped by 10 percent, and gasoline output fell by 14 percent. In contrast, diesel fuel production rose by 10 percent, while overall electricity generation also increased. Large enterprises generated 15.5 percent less electricity, but small businesses boosted their production by 2.5 times.
The National Statistics Committee has published its industrial production report for January–August 2025.
During the first eight months of this year, total natural gas output amounted to 28.9 billion cubic meters – down by 1.2 billion cubic meters, or 4 percent, compared to the same period in 2024, and down by 2.5 billion cubic meters compared to 2023.
For reference, gas production decreased from 53.8 billion to 51.67 billion cubic meters (–4 percent) in 2022, from 51.67 billion to 46.71 billion cubic meters (–9.6 percent) in 2023, and from 46.71 billion to 44.59 billion cubic meters (–4.5 percent) in 2024.
The dynamics of natural gas production between 2018 and 2024 were as follows:
- 2018 – 61.59 billion cubic meters
- 2019 – 60.71 billion cubic meters
- 2020 – 49.77 billion cubic meters
- 2021 – 53.8 billion cubic meters
- 2022 – 51.67 billion cubic meters
- 2023 – 46.71 billion cubic meters
- 2024 – 44.59 billion cubic meters
Earlier, it was reported that in the first eight months of 2025, Uzbekistan exported $495 million worth of gas (+24.1 percent) and imported $886 million worth (–28 percent).
Compared to the same period last year, crude oil production fell from 485,000 tons to 434,000 tons (–10.5 percent), gasoline production dropped from 898,000 tons to 770,000 tons (–14.2 percent), and gas condensate output declined from 829,000 tons to 760,000 tons (–8.3 percent).
Meanwhile, diesel fuel production increased from 711,000 tons to 786,000 tons (+10.5 percent), and coal mining grew from 4.4 million tons to 4.7 million tons (+6.8 percent).
Total electricity generation also rose. While large enterprises reduced their output by 15.5 percent, small businesses expanded theirs 2.5 times. In January–August 2024, Uzbekistan generated 54.65 billion kWh of electricity, compared to 56.41 billion kWh in the same period this year.
During the reporting period, Uzbekistan also produced 284,352 cars – an increase of 24,000 units compared to 2024.
