Uzbek nationals caught trying to smuggle over 61 kg of gold in Turkey
Authorities in Turkey have detained Uzbek nationals who attempted to smuggle over 61 kg of gold into the country by concealing it inside small household appliances.
The attempted smuggling was intercepted at Nevşehir Airport, according to the press service of the city’s security department.
During a baggage inspection of six passengers, five of whom were Uzbek citizens, officials noticed suspicious kitchen appliances.
A detailed examination revealed compartments inside the appliances containing a total of 61 kg 121 g of gold. The market value of the gold is estimated at around 350 million Turkish lira (approximately $8.3 million).
The suspects were taken into custody and handed over to the prosecutor’s office. One foreign national was transferred to immigration authorities for deportation.
