Government sets higher crop targets as new farming technologies are introduced

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, speaking at a meeting with agricultural workers, said Uzbekistan has the potential to increase next year’s cotton harvest to 4.5 million tonnes and grain output to 10 million tonnes. He outlined specific tasks for introducing new agrotechnologies and high-yield varieties to achieve these targets.

The president noted that he recently held meetings with farmers and households in Samarkand, Jizzakh and Syrdarya regions, and that seeing the healthy competition, dedication and determination on the ground strengthened his confidence that the ambitious targets set for next year are fully achievable.

According to officials, next year:

  • The cotton cultivation system under Scheme No. 76 will be scaled up, with cotton to be fully grown under this model on 891,000 hectares of land;
  • Areas where foreign cotton varieties resistant to bollworm, herbicides, salinity and water scarcity are planted will be doubled, reaching 500,000 hectares;
  • Based on the “Xinjiang experience”, cottonseed will be planted on 300,000 hectares.

To support the introduction of new agrotechnologies, UZS 2.6 trillion in concessional loans will be allocated to expand the use of drip irrigation systems in the fields.

In addition, UZS 250 billion will be directed to subsidize up to 10 percent of the harvest of cotton-growing farmers who use their own funds. Farmers who have used up to half of their credit limit for cotton cultivation will also be eligible to receive subsidies of up to 5 percent of their harvest.

The president stressed that by combining advanced agrotechnologies, water-saving methods and farmers’ practical experience, the agricultural sector is expected to achieve new, higher milestones.
