How to get a prescription to buy medications

In Uzbekistan, starting from December 10, 2025, pharmacies and medical institutions began implementing the “Electronic Prescription” system. We outlined a new procedure for purchasing medications and asked the Head of the Central Multidisciplinary Polyclinic of the Yunusabad District of Tashkent, Diyara Rustamovna Atazhanova, whether it is necessary to get prescriptions for medications every time. How are electronic prescriptions issued?

Diyara Rustamovna Atazhanova is also a member of the expert commission on electronic prescriptions under the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Which medications require a prescription

Before going to a pharmacy, it is worth checking whether the medication is sold by prescription or over the counter. This can be found out through:

  • my.gov — the service Information on prescription and over-the-counter medicines
  • On the packaging / in the medication leaflet
  • A search query in Google, Yandex, etc.
  • By the pharmacy's phone number
  • At the pharmacy itself
  • In the State Register of Medicines and Medical Devices
The service Information on medications dispensed with and without a prescription on my.gov

According to Atazhanova D. R.:

“All medications for first aid are included in the over-the-counter list. For example, if a person has a fever, the pharmacist will provide an over-the-counter antipyretic medication.”

When someone is ill, it is still worth considering visiting a doctor or calling a therapist from the polyclinic to your home (if it is difficult to leave the house due to illness). Check the possibility of a home visit by calling the polyclinic to which your medical record is attached.

If a medication is dispensed by prescription, you can obtain a prescription at a doctor’s appointment.

How to book a doctor’s appointment

You can make an appointment through:

  • The phone number of your polyclinic
  • My.gov (only with a therapist)
  • The DMED mobile application (some functions are still being finalized)
  • By personally taking a place in line at the registration desk

Find out the doctor’s schedule in advance. Doctors in state institutions often see patients for half a shift in the first or second half of the day, on weekdays, from Monday to Saturday.

What kind of prescription a doctor issues

To issue a prescription, the doctor examines the patient and decides which medications are needed and in what quantity.

According to Atazhanova D. R.:

“The quantity of medications available at the pharmacy will depend on the doctor’s prescriptions. The doctor will indicate the daily intake frequency, single dose, method of administration, and duration of treatment.”

The doctor enters the INN of the medication. Fragment of the interview “How to get an electronic prescription”

If necessary, the doctor will issue an electronic prescription with a QR code.

Which medications to buy

Your prescription will be available in the Mening retseptlarim in the DMED application or on my.gov.

And you will receive a printed prescription with a QR code.

With an electronic prescription, you can go to any pharmacy and contact the pharmacist.

According to Atazhanova D. R.:

Trade names of medications will not be indicated in the prescription. The pharmacist will only see the INN of the medication. This is done so that it is possible to choose a medication with the main active substance based on preferences: price, country of manufacture, etc.”

INN (international nonproprietary name) is the name of the active substance in a medication.

By the INN, you choose which medication to buy and in what quantity, but not more than indicated in the prescription.

According to Atazhanova D. R.:

“It is not necessary to purchase everything in the prescription at once. Part can be bought in one pharmacy, and the remainder in another. The system will track how much is left.”

Example

The doctor issued a prescription for 30 tablets for 30 days.

  • At the pharmacy, the patient buys one package of 10 tablets.
  • The system shows the remaining balance — 20 tablets.
  • Later, the patient can purchase the remaining amount at any pharmacy without a repeat visit to the doctor

What to do when treating chronic diseases

People with chronic diseases who are under dispensary supervision can receive a reimbursable prescription.

Reimbursement is a program for providing medications through pharmacies at the expense of a fund for the treatment of patients with chronic diseases.

The program was launched in the Syrdarya region during 2020–2024 and is being implemented in the city of Tashkent.

According to Atazhanova D. R.:

“A prescription can be issued for a maximum of 3 months.

Once a month, it is necessary to contact the attending physician to monitor the patient’s condition. This is a requirement of the insurance fund that allocates funds for medications.”

Summary

Many medications and first aid items will still be sold without a prescription.

It is better to visit a doctor in a timely manner. If it is difficult to come in person, sometimes it is possible to call a therapist to your home.

Trade names of medications will not be indicated in prescriptions. This will make it possible to choose medications by price, country of manufacture, etc.

Part of the prescription medications can be purchased later at any pharmacy.
