Authorities intercept over 500 grams of smuggled and illicit gold across Uzbekistan

Law enforcement authorities in Uzbekistan have successfully intercepted the illegal trade and smuggling of gold products valued at approximately UZS 1 billion during a series of coordinated operations across three regions. According to official reports, more than 500 grams of gold items were seized from suspects, the majority of which had been brought into the country from abroad.

In Bukhara region, operational teams detained two individuals, aged 21 and 25, while they were attempting to sell a non-standard shaped gold bar. The bar, which had a net weight of 110 grams, was being offered for $17,000. Subsequent searches at the home of one of the suspects revealed a clandestine workshop used for melting and processing precious metals. Investigators discovered specialized melting equipment, chemical precursors, and oxygen and gas cylinders used in the production of the alloy. Forensic experts later valued the seized bar at UZS 209,757,000.

A separate incident occurred at the Tashkent International Airport, where a 46-year-old foreign national arriving from abroad was apprehended. During a personal search, customs officers discovered that the individual had concealed 226 grams of gold jewelry inside his footwear to bypass mandatory declarations. The estimated market value of these hidden items is UZS 290,516,000.

Furthermore, a smuggling attempt was thwarted at the Dustlik international border crossing in Andijan region. A 29-year-old resident of Andijan was stopped upon entering Uzbekistan from Kyrgyzstan. A thorough inspection revealed 241 grams of undeclared gold jewelry with an approximate value of UZS 400,000,000. Preliminary investigations indicate that the jewelry was originally sourced from Turkey and transported through Kyrgyzstan for the purpose of illegal resale within Uzbekistan.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated in relation to all three cases under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code. Investigative efforts are currently ongoing to identify other potential members of these smuggling networks and to determine the full scale of the illegal operations.
