Renewable energy production in Uzbekistan surges by 37% in early 2026

Uzbekistan’s green energy sector continues to show rapid growth, with the volume of electricity generated from renewable sources exceeding 3 billion kWh since the beginning of this year.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Energy, the country reached this milestone by the afternoon of April 20, marking a significant step in the nation's transition to a sustainable energy mix.

A breakdown of the data shows that solar photovoltaic stations accounted for approximately 54% of the output, contributing 1.64 billion kWh. Wind farms provided the remaining 1.387 billion kWh. This total represents a 37% increase, or an additional 792 million kWh, compared to the same period in 2025.

The pace of generation is notably accelerating. While it took 44 days to produce the first billion kWh of green energy this year and 35 days for the second, the third billion was generated in just 31 days starting from March 20. This trend reflects the increasing capacity and efficiency of the country’s newly commissioned renewable energy facilities.

The environmental and economic impact of this shift is substantial. The use of solar and wind resources has resulted in the conservation of 807 million cubic meters of natural gas and prevented the emission of more than 1.74 million tons of harmful substances into the atmosphere. When including the contribution of hydroelectric power plants, the total volume of renewable energy produced since the start of the year rises to 4.65 billion kWh. This broader green output has saved a total of 1.24 billion cubic meters of gas and mitigated over 2.67 million tons of atmospheric emissions.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the current volume of green generation is sufficient to cover the average four-month electricity needs of 5.8 million households, or the total annual consumption of 1.9 million homes.

The rapid trajectory of the sector is evident when compared to previous years. In 2022, the first solar plants in the Navoi and Samarkand regions produced a modest 434 million kWh. By 2024, production had climbed to 4.86 billion kWh, and in 2025, the combined output of all solar and wind stations reached 10.5 billion kWh, representing a more than twofold increase within a single year.
