Government mandates twice-monthly car-free days to tackle air pollution in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan plans to introduce "Car-Free Day" and "Car-Free Week" initiatives twice a month starting May 1, as part of a comprehensive strategy to improve environmental conditions and ease urban traffic congestion.
Under the new legislation, civil servants will face several restrictions during these campaigns, including a strict ban on the use of official vehicles on designated days. To ensure social protection and compliance, if the scheduled car-free dates fall on working days, drivers of these vehicles will retain their full salaries.
The initiative is designed to achieve multiple goals – specifically cutting urban air pollution, promoting the use of public transport, and raising general environmental awareness among the population. By encouraging a shift away from private and official motor vehicles, the government aims to foster a more sustainable urban ecosystem.
Similar measures are widely utilized in major cities globally and are regarded as an effective method for reducing traffic density and protecting the environment.
