ACWA Power to expand green energy and hydrogen projects in Uzbekistan

On May 3, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev received a high–level delegation from Saudi Arabia led by Mohammad Abunayyan, Chairman of ACWA Power. The meeting, which also included Omar Al–Midani, President and CEO of the investment firm Vision Invest, focused on expanding the strategic partnership between the two nations and accelerating the implementation of large–scale joint initiatives.

President Mirziyoyev praised ACWA Power as a key partner in Uzbekistan’s transition to green energy, noting that investment projects launched last December for solar and wind power plants are proceeding on schedule. During the discussions, the parties reviewed a diverse portfolio of upcoming developments, including the construction of the New Tashkent International Airport, a multidisciplinary medical facility in Fergana, and a modern data center at IT Park.

Chairman Mohammad Abunayyan stressed Saudi Arabia’s unwavering commitment to Uzbekistan despite the current global geopolitical volatility and regional tensions in the Middle East. He noted that while many global powers are increasingly prioritizing domestic investment, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has issued specific directives to strengthen ties and further increase investments in Uzbekistan. Currently, ACWA Power is finalizing plans for an additional $5 billion in investments, which include a new green hydrogen project and a second major infrastructure project in the Syrdarya region.

Simultaneously, Vision Invest is developing specific proposals for active participation in the construction of the New Tashkent city project. To further showcase the partnership, Chairman Abunayyan invited Uzbek companies to Saudi Arabia, announcing plans to allocate 5,000–6,000 square meters of space at the Riyadh City Boulevard for a dedicated Uzbekistan pavilion. This site will host a major project highlighting the rich history and culture of the republic.

Concluding the meeting, Abunayyan delivered a personal message from His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, reaffirming that the partnership with Uzbekistan remains a top priority and will remain unaffected by shifting international geopolitical dynamics.
