Kazakhstan police detain man for extorting travelers at Kazakh–Uzbek border
Police in the Turkistan region of Kazakhstan have apprehended a man accused of extorting money from individuals crossing the border into Uzbekistan. The arrest follows the circulation of a video on social media showing a large crowd at the Kaplanbek checkpoint, where victims reported being harassed and threatened by an unidentified individual.
According to witness accounts and footage from the scene, the man allegedly used a screwdriver to intimidate travelers and demand cash payments. The incident occurred during a period of significant congestion at the border post on May 9, which created a vulnerable environment for those waiting to pass through the checkpoint.
The Police Department of the Turkistan region confirmed that a criminal case has been initiated regarding these illegal actions. The suspect, identified as a 43-year-old resident of the region with no fixed address, was quickly located and taken into custody by law enforcement officers.
The individual is currently being held at a temporary detention center in the Saryagash district while investigators conclude their inquiries. Authorities have noted that the investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect's activities and whether other individuals were involved in the extortion scheme.
