Tashkent and Astana launch joint effort to tackle cross-border air pollution

The two sides discussed expanding cooperation on atmospheric monitoring, exchanging scientific data and implementing the Clean Air project, Kazakhstan's Vostochny Express 24 news portal reported.

The initiative follows an agreement reached by Presidents Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during talks in April this year.

The discussions focused on improving air quality monitoring systems, including measurements of fine particulate matter known as PM2.5 and PM10. Participants also examined how atmospheric processes contribute to the movement of pollutants across the territories of the two neighboring countries.

Representatives of the environmental agencies stressed that tackling air pollution requires closer scientific cooperation, regular information exchange and coordinated decision-making.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties agreed to establish a joint working group comprising scientists and specialized experts from both countries. The group will develop practical measures to reduce transboundary air pollution and improve the environmental situation across the region.
