Uzbekistan plans five new reservoirs to harness floodwaters and expand farmland
Uzbekistan will construct five mudflow reservoirs starting in 2027, according to a presidential decree on measures to ensure the effective use of mudflow and floodwaters. The initiative aims to make better use of seasonal floodwaters, improve irrigation coverage, and open up additional agricultural land.
The reservoirs will be built across three regions: Samarkand, Tashkent, and Jizzakh. Once completed, the facilities are expected to improve water supply across a combined area of more than 9,300 hectares – 7,000 in Samarkand region, 2,000 in Tashkent region, and 300 in Jizzakh region. The projects will also enable the development of previously uncultivated land.
Financing will follow a public-private partnership model. Some projects will draw on funding from Agrobank, with participation from the private sector.
The decree also envisions broader economic activity around the reservoir sites. Tourist and recreational zones are to be established in their vicinity, and provisions have been made for the development of fisheries and other income-generating activities at the sites.
