Speaking in an interview with the Uzbekistan National News Agency, UzA, Umurzakov said the city authorities had placed the issue under strict oversight to prevent similar cases from recurring.
“Unfortunately, many plots previously allocated for parking facilities have ended up being developed into business centers,” he said. “To prevent such mistakes from being repeated, we are now keeping this issue under strict control together with the relevant authorities.”
According to the mayor, sites for multi-storey and underground parking facilities with capacity for a total of 200,000 vehicles have been identified jointly with the Urbanization Committee. The sites are being gradually offered for auction.
The issue of expanding parking infrastructure has been on the government's agenda for several years. A presidential decision signed in 2023 called for the establishment of a specialized state institution responsible for developing multi-storey parking facilities in Tashkent and transferring them to entrepreneurs on the condition that the facilities retain their designated purpose.
Later, the authorities also provided for the simplified implementation of public-private partnership projects for the construction of parking facilities in the capital.
Tashkent is also expected to introduce a Park & Ride system by the end of 2028 by establishing parking facilities near metro stations. Under the planned system, motorists using the parking facilities will be eligible for fare discounts, while a mechanism is expected to allow parking fees to be paid through the metro ticketing system.
