Uzbekistan steps up institutional cooperation with UN on statelessness and asylum rights

Akmal Saidov, the Director of the National Center for Human Rights of Uzbekistan, met with Mahir Safarli, the Regional Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Central Asia, to discuss bilateral efforts in humanitarian protection.

The talks focused on the current state and future prospects of cooperation regarding the protection of the rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons. Both officials emphasized the importance of further strengthening institutional interaction between the National Center for Human Rights and the UNHCR.

Following the meeting, the two parties signed a joint working plan for 2026.

The newly approved document outlines priority areas for collaborative action in the upcoming period. Key focus areas include refining national legislation and law enforcement practices, boosting public awareness, building institutional capacity, and promoting international standards in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable populations.

Both sides expressed their commitment to fostering a constructive partnership and ensuring the effective implementation of the newly signed agreements.
