Tashkent records 47 vehicle fires in five months as officials warn over unsafe modifications and poor maintenance
Since the beginning of 2026, Tashkent has recorded 47 instances of vehicles catching fire, according to data released by the capital's Department of Emergency Situations.
Emergency officials emphasized that the issue takes on added urgency during the hot summer months, prompting safety experts to outline the primary factors behind these hazardous incidents.
A leading cause of vehicle fires is the installation of aftermarket devices and accessories that car owners add after purchasing their vehicles. When these components are poorly mounted or installed without proper oversight, they frequently cause short circuits that can ignite a blaze. Experts noted that components intended to enhance passenger comfort, specifically aftermarket power windows, are among the most common culprits.
To dampen the noise or vibration of these power window mechanisms, some car owners use cloth or other makeshift materials to secure them. If a short circuit occurs, these materials quickly catch fire. The risk escalates further when electrical wiring is routed carelessly between newly installed devices.
Safety specialists identified driver negligence as the second major contributing factor. Despite routine official recommendations to use high-quality, certified components, many motorists opt for cheaper, uncertified counterfeits due to budget constraints.
Furthermore, drivers frequently ignore developing mechanical or electrical faults, continuing to operate their vehicles while putting off necessary repairs indefinitely. Experts warned that delaying essential maintenance ultimately compromises the vehicle's electrical system, paving the way for short circuits, sudden technical failures, and unexpected fires.
The Department of Emergency Situations reminded all motorists of their legal obligation to maintain their vehicles in a technically sound condition and to ensure that an operational fire extinguisher is easily accessible inside the vehicle at all times.
