Government approves creation of regional atomic energy competence center in Tashkent
A regional center for knowledge and skills in atomic energy will be established in Tashkent to train specialists from across Central Asia, foster international educational programs, and advance nuclear safety cooperation.
Under a decree approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, the new regional training hub will operate as a distinct internal division within the Tashkent branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute). The facility will utilize the existing infrastructure of the university branch without holding the status of a separate legal entity.
The center is designed to provide specialized instructional modules and hands-on workshops focused on the design, construction, and safe operation of nuclear facilities. These programs will adhere strictly to international standards and recommendations set forth by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Training sessions will leverage the branch’s modern educational laboratories as well as dedicated nuclear power plant simulators, which will be utilized to upskill personnel from reactor and turbine departments.
Beyond its core educational mandate, the center will offer expert consulting services to Central Asian nations looking to develop their national nuclear infrastructure and promote a culture of nuclear safety. It will also serve as a mechanism to build a regional talent pool, facilitate academic exchanges for students and young scientists, and share Uzbekistan’s growing expertise in the nuclear sector with neighboring states.
The government has mandated that the official regulations, staffing plans, and organizational structure of the center be finalized within one month, with comprehensive measures to fully staff the facility with qualified professionals completed within three months.
