Extreme temperatures force speed restrictions on Tashkent's elevated metro routes
Train speeds on Tashkent's elevated metro lines have been temporarily reduced as exceptionally hot weather pushes rail temperatures above safe operating limits.
According to the state enterprise Toshkent Metro, soaring air temperatures across Uzbekistan have caused the temperature of elevated railway rails to exceed the established safety threshold of 55°C.
Under existing operating regulations, trains running on elevated metro sections will travel at a reduced speed of 40 km/h instead of 60 km/h from 15 July 2026. The restriction will apply daily until 6:00 p.m.
The operator said the measure is intended to ensure passenger safety and prevent rail deformation caused by prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
The temporary speed limit is also expected to affect service intervals. As a result, passengers using elevated metro routes may experience waiting times of up to 14 minutes between trains.
Toshkent Metro stressed that the restrictions apply only to elevated metro lines. Underground routes will continue operating under their regular schedule.
The company added that passenger safety remains its top priority and said it will continue providing safe, reliable and comfortable transport services.
