Rustam Juraev appointed head of the Presidential State Security Service

Under a separate presidential decree, Juraev was also awarded the special rank of lieutenant general.

Juraev is regarded as one of Uzbekistan's most experienced law enforcement officials. Born in Tashkent on July 26, 1968, he completed compulsory military service in 1986–1988 and graduated from the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1994.

He began his career in 1989 as a junior investigator in the criminal investigation service before serving as an investigator and senior investigator in Tashkent's Yunusabad district. He later held a number of senior positions within the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Between 2008 and 2012, he worked as an inspector and senior inspector in the Presidential Administration.

Juraev also served as deputy chief of the Tashkent City Department of Internal Affairs – head of its Investigation Department, and later headed the internal affairs departments of Namangan and Khorezm regions. He was Minister of Emergency Situations in 2017–2018, deputy minister of internal affairs and chief of the Tashkent City Department of Internal Affairs from 2018 to 2020, and commander of the National Guard from March 2020.

In January 2026, he was appointed first deputy minister of internal affairs – head of the Public Security Service.

During his career, Juraev was awarded the honorary title of Honoured Lawyer of Uzbekistan.

As head of the Presidential State Security Service, he will be responsible for ensuring the security of the head of state and other protected officials, preventing threats to national security within the agency's remit, and overseeing reforms in the service.

Earlier, Alisher Usmonov was relieved of his duties as head of the Presidential State Security Service. He had held the post since December 2020, having previously served as deputy head of the service.
