Speaking on July 22 at the launch ceremony for the Tashkent–Samarkand toll road project, the president recalled that major road infrastructure projects had been outlined in his address to the Oliy Majlis and the people of Uzbekistan, adding that they are now moving into the implementation stage.
"We have already begun construction of the first toll road linking Khiva, one of our country's historic centers, with the city of Urgench. God willing, we will put it into operation next month," Mirziyoyev said.
He noted that the new highway would become an important part of the country's tourism infrastructure, serving both residents of Khorezm region and domestic and international visitors.
According to the Committee for Roads under the Ministry of Transport, construction of the 35-kilometer toll road was 80% complete as of July 15.
The agency said earthworks and foundation construction have been fully completed, while the first layer of asphalt concrete has already been laid along a 25-kilometer section of the route.
The project has so far included the construction of 15 bridges, one tunnel, five underpasses and 101 drainage structures.
Plans for Uzbekistan's first toll road were first announced in January. The highway will provide a direct connection between Khiva and Urgench International Airport.
Construction began in February. The $120 million project provides for the construction of a four-lane, 35-kilometer toll road with a capacity of more than 20,000 vehicles per day. Once completed, it is expected to include 17 bridges, eight overpasses, one tunnel and five dedicated crossings.
