Akbar Sultanov removed as head of Uzcharmsanoat
Akbar Sultanov has been relieved of his post as chairman of the Uzcharmsanoat Association following a directive issued during a government meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The decision was announced at a meeting focused on ensuring high economic growth rates across sectors and regions. During the discussion, the leadership of the association was criticized for failing to introduce innovation in the industry and for insufficient engagement at the operational level.
According to figures presented at the meeting, out of 972 footwear manufacturing enterprises operating in the country, 378 have suspended operations, while another 120 are utilizing less than half of their production capacity.
The sector also remains dependent on imports for key inputs such as shoe lasts, laces and fittings, highlighting structural weaknesses in local supply chains.
As a result, the industry failed to meet its export commitments last year. Of the pledged $250 million in exports, even 40% was not achieved. Officials also described this year’s production and export plans as unsatisfactory.
Akbar Sultanov had been appointed chairman of the Uzcharmsanoat Association in November 2024.
