Construction begins on Uzbekistan’s first toll road connecting Urgench and Khiva
Construction has officially commenced on Uzbekistan’s first toll road, a high-tech artery connecting the historic cities of Urgench and Khiva. The project, valued at $120 million, aims to modernize the region’s transport infrastructure while significantly enhancing transit efficiency between these key tourism hubs.

According to a report by the Uzbekistan24 TV channel, the 35 km four-lane highway is designed to handle a capacity of more than 20,000 vehicles per day. The infrastructure plan is extensive, featuring the construction of 17 bridges, 8 overpasses, 1 tunnel, and 5 specialized corridors.
A standout feature of the project is the integration of artificial intelligence. Traffic flow will be managed via AI-based digital systems capable of automatically identifying various vehicle types, including heavy trucks, buses, minibuses, and passenger cars.
The technical specifications of the road are equally rigorous. The pavement will have a total thickness of approximately 87 centimeters, with the top two layers constructed from specialized high-strength materials based on modified bitumen to ensure longevity and durability.
The new expressway is set to transform the commute between the two cities. Currently, the journey takes approximately one hour; however, the new route will reduce travel time to just 17 minutes – a three-fold improvement.
To facilitate operations, toll terminals will be positioned at the beginning, middle, and end of the highway, complemented by two dedicated service stations.
Given the high level of groundwater in the area, engineers are developing a specialized collector project and considering the installation of modern drainage systems to protect the road’s integrity.
Safety and environmental impact have also been factored into the design:
- Wildlife protection: Dedicated crossings for animals will be built at various sections of the road.
- Pedestrian safety: Overpasses will be constructed at intersections near residential settlements.
Experts emphasize that the toll status of the road will guarantee a high level of service, ensuring timely repairs and the maintenance of superior operational quality over the long term.
