Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to be attracted to projects in the Aral Sea region

Uzbekistan intends to attract funds from the charitable organization of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to promote green investments within the framework of the UN multi-partner trust fund for human security in the Aral Sea region, Kun.uz correspondent reports.

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a resolution that envisages development of a strategy plan with participation of the UN for attracting financial resources for the operation of the trust fund, after which its investment portfolio for 2019 will be approved.

The fundraising strategy should also include a private sector. To this end, President Mirziyoyev instructed to form a list of transnational companies that have charitable foundations (the foundation “Coca-Cola”, the company “Uzkorgas”, etc.) and private organizations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The latter is considered the largest private fund in the United States with assets in the amount of $50 billion.

The UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund was officially launched at the UN Headquarters in New York on November 27, 2018. It must mobilize financial and technical means for projects aimed at eliminating the consequences of environmental disaster in the Aral Sea region. The fund will function until the end of 2023.

The first donor of the fund was the Uzbek government, which invested $6,5 million. Norway, Japan and a number of other countries have also expressed a desire to finance its projects.
