Confidential sites of the USSR: Information about biochemical ground in the Aral Sea publicized
Argumenty i Fakty newspaper published information about the hidden objects that existed during the USSR period. Among them, there is a biochemical ground on the Vozrozhdeniya (Renascence) Island, located in the middle of the Aral Sea.
It was reported that from 1942 to 1992, there was a military biochemical range on the Vozrozhdeniya Island, which was located in the middle of the Aral Sea basin. Its conditional name is “Barkhan”.
For half a century, experimental animals – dogs, monkeys, sheep and horses were tested on bacteriological weapons. Samples of drugs were delivered from all military biochemical laboratories in the USSR – Stepnogorsk, Kirov, Sverdlovsk-19, Omutninsk, Sergiev Posad, Obolensk.
The object was strictly guarded and the entrance to the island was strictly forbidden. The level of confidentiality was so great that even most of the employees performing duties on the ground service did not know where they were working.
Biomedical institutions – corps and laboratories, vivarium and a whole complex of equipment warehouses were located on the island. Favorable conditions for military scientists were created in the city.
In 1992, President Boris Yeltsin signed a decree to close the ground. The military contingent was directed to Kirov and the bio-laboratory was demolished.
No one knows what scientists were doing on the Vozrozhdeniya Island. The equipment was transported by the marauding people, they carried everything of value. There are only deserted buildings left.
According to Argumenty i Fakty, in 1995, American military bacteriologists arrived at the ground – after the collapse of the USSR, the Uzbek and Kazakh authorities, who owned the island territory, invited them. Foreigners collected samples from the old cemetery.
