Demirchi - one of the sites preserved an ancient look of Azerbaijan (photos)

The tourism sector in Azerbaijan has a great prospect as the country’s potential for the development of many types of tourism is huge. Recent socio-economic development has created new opportunities for the expansion of this sector. Measures taken during systematic study of tourist resources, organizing necessary services to meet the needs of tourists and bringing them into line with modern standards, expanding the sanatorium and resort facilities, raising the number of hotels and other tourist facilities have given practical results. The main goal is to make tourism a stable, efficient and competitive sphere of the economy.

Renovation of the tourist infrastructure, reconstruction of historical monuments and accomplishment of many other well-being works in Demirchi village of Shamakhi district are examples of improving tourist attraction. Demirchi is one of the most ancient villages in Shamakhi district, its history dates back to the 15th century. The name of this place - "Demirchi" (silversmith), was given to it because of the prevalence of iron making in the village.

In the olden times, there were several caravan hotels in the village along the Great Silk Road. However, most of the ancient buildings in Demirchi, including caravan hotels, were destroyed.

Local people with interesting customs and traditions, as well as a unique culture focus on science and education. Therefore, efforts to restore and rebuild the historical landscape in the past few years are one of the important steps taken by the country to preserve this unique monument and to bring it to the next generation.

Restoration works were carried out in several directions and had a complex character. Firstly, the village mosque was rebuilt. The mosque "Demirchi", one of the most ancient religious sites in Azerbaijan, was built in 755 and reconstructed in accordance with the decree of President Ilham Aliyev.

A number of projects have been implemented here to attract local residents and tourists. Tourists are offered various souvenirs, practical classes.

In the village, places of interest have been organized for tourists to have meaningful leisure and entertainments. One of them is tandyr (clay oven) built in several places. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva are offered bread baked in tandyr. Tourists are also invited to the national cuisine of the village.

An exhibition of the Shamakhi historical-local lore museum has been opened in Demirchi. These exhibits give a broad idea of Shamakhi's ancient history.

The carpets, which are also being sold to tourists in Demirchi, are also widely making known Azerbaijani carpets in the world.

Silversmith workshops were organized in the village to increase an interest in this profession.

Thus, the conditions created in the tourist infrastructure of Demirchi village once again demonstrate the results of Azerbaijan's efforts to develop tourism in a short period of time. This opens up wide opportunities for the rich ancient culture of Azerbaijan and diversity of the nation's cuisine.
