Kazakhstan will not send a note to Uzbekistan, this issue is not being considered, Zakon.kz reports referring to the official representative of Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry Aybek Smadiyarov.

The report said that the situation with the dam breakthrough at the Sardoba reservoir in Uzbekistan and, as a result, flooding of a number of settlements in the Turkestan region, is under special control of the government.

On May 2, a telephone conversation took place between President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The parties substantively discussed the current situation and agreed on the coordinated work of the governments of the two countries.

“Taking into account the close interaction of governments and leaders of the border regions on the joint liquidation of the consequences of flooding, the issue of sending the Uzbek side a note of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not being considered,” Smadiyarov said.

In addition, the head of the Turkestan region made an operational trip to the regions of Uzbekistan and held the necessary negotiations, the results of which he reported at today’s government meeting.

It is noted that a government commission, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar, has been created. Tomorrow he will fly to Turkestan region and then Uzbekistan to develop an algorithm for joint action.

All contacts between the two parties are carried out in full accordance with the norms of the agreements on eternal friendship, strategic partnership and the convention on the protection and use of trans-boundary watercourses and international lakes.

Earlier it was reported that Kazakhstan is preparing a note to Uzbekistan in connection with the situation in the Turkestan region.

Vice Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources Sergey Gromov said that in an official note, the Kazakh side may demand compensation for damages and will oppose the restoration of the dam at the Sardoba reservoir since the object was built without approval from the Kazakh side. Therefore, this violates the UN international convention on the protection of trans-boundary watercourses.
