Uzbekistan plans to boost night economy with 24/7 public transport and dining options

The Strategic Reforms Agency of Uzbekistan has unveiled proposals to enhance the country's night economy by drawing inspiration from global practices in developed nations such as the UK, Thailand, the US, UAE, and Australia. These cities have demonstrated how vibrant night economies significantly contribute to economic growth.

According to the Agency’s press service, Uzbekistan is looking to take substantial steps beyond merely transforming certain streets into gastronomic zones. To foster a robust night economy, the proposals emphasize developing a comprehensive infrastructure that supports round-the-clock operations for various sectors.

The proposals, which aim to be implemented in stages, include:

  1. Establishing a task force: By February 1, 2025, a working group will be formed to oversee initiatives aimed at advancing the night-time economy and tourism.
  2. Relaxing operating restrictions: Entertainment venues would be allowed to operate 24/7 on Fridays and Saturdays, removing existing limitations on business hours.
  3. Identifying tourist zones: Specific areas will be designated as tourist hubs, equipped to host night-time events.
  4. 24/7 public transport: Tashkent’s buses, trams, and metro services will transition to round-the-clock operations, ensuring seamless mobility for residents and tourists.
  5. "Night Tashkent" digital platform: A dedicated online portal will provide comprehensive information about night-time venues, public transport routes, and special offers.
  6. Infrastructure modernization: Certain districts will undergo modernization, including enhanced street lighting and improved amenities for both locals and visitors.

To ensure the initiative's success, the Agency has recommended drafting a presidential decree, “On Further Development Measures for Uzbekistan’s Night Economy”. This decree will include provisions for reforming licensing procedures specific to night-time economic activities.
