Uzbekistan’s monthly green energy production hits 1.1 billion kWh in May, reaches 17% of total electricity output

Solar and wind power plants in Uzbekistan generated a record-breaking 1.104 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity in May, according to the Ministry of Energy. This marks the first time in the country’s history that monthly production from renewable sources alone exceeded 1 billion kWh.

This figure accounts for 17% of the nation’s total electricity output for the month – an all-time high for green energy. By comparison, in May 2022, green generation stood at 434 million kWh, and in May 2023, it reached 576.9 million kWh.

Breakdown by source:

11 solar power plants generated a combined 712 million kWh;
3 wind farms contributed 392 million kWh.

As a result of this surge in renewable output, more than 335 million cubic meters of natural gas were saved. Additionally, the use of solar and wind energy prevented the emission of:

638,000 tons of CO₂,
537 tons of nitrogen oxides,
100 tons of carbon monoxide, and
6.7 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) into the atmosphere.

When hydropower plants are included, the total volume of fuel-free electricity reached 1.81 billion kWh in May – 28% of total generation. This helped save over 551 million cubic meters of gas and prevented more than 1 million tons of CO₂ emissions.
